Staying home this year? Don't despair! Ireland has a whole host of amazing activities that will keep you (and the family) busy all summer long! This week we're looking at Cork.
English Market
The English Market has been serving Cork City since 1788 and is an absolute must-see on any Staycation day. The market is open from 8am-6pm from Monday to Saturday and is filled to the brim with businesses both big and small. You will find everything from meat and fish to chocolates and cakes as well as homeware, clothing, novelty gifts and art.
As the website says "To properly savour the experience of visiting the English Market, visitors need to have the space and time to walk it’s aisles, to view the stalls and to sit, sip a coffee, and enjoy the unique trading experience of the Market that has survived since the 18th Century."
Crawford Art Gallery
The Crawford Art Gallery is open to the public from 10am - 5pm Monday to Saturday and is located in the heart of Cork City. The gallery is home to over 2500 works, ranging from eighteenth century Irish and European painting and sculpture, through to contemporary video installations as well as a range of visiting installations.
The gallery is very family friendly and provides tours and classes as well as providing a café and shop. You can plan your visit here!
Everyman theatre
The Everyman is a beautiful 650 seat theatre and is one of Ireland's favourite venues. A listed building, the venue is steeped in history and is a perfect night out for anyone enjoying a Staycation in the city.
The theatre has been home to productions such as Seán O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock, award-winning Opera Faust and Chekov's Match. However, if opera and theatre aren't your bag then not to worry, the Everyman also hosts Comedians such as Des Bishop as well as musicians such as Don Baker. Check out the website and get booking!
Cork Harbour Boat Hire
Fancy a day out with the family? Want to do something a little different? Cork Harbour Boat Hire allows you to take out a self-drive boat for the day! Training, life jackets and petrol are all included in the pricing and a safety boat guide will lead the way.
You can book the one hour family tour to take in the sights of Cobh in all its glory or the 3-4 hour adventure tour where you and your family can stop off at Fota Island Castle for a picnic! Check our prices and information here.
The Butter Museum
If you're a big foodie or just love all things a little bit weird and wonderful then the Cork Butter Museum is the Staycation destination for you. Located in the historic Shandon area of Cork city hosts a range of traditional butter-making equipment as well as a bitter wrapper collection that won't be found anywhere else in the world!
The story of butter making is surprisingly informative as it reflects the commercial, social, and domestic life of Ireland in that time. For more information and times click here!
