The Irish musical drama Flora and Son and the fantasy comedy Poor Things are among the films that feature on Oscars shortlists announced ahead of next month's nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body that oversees the Oscars, has released the early contenders in 10 categories.

The films will now go on to the next stage of the nominations where members of the Academy will select from the reduced list of contenders in each category to pick the final five nominees.

Flora and Son, written and directed by Once and Sing Street filmmaker John Carney and starring Eve Hewson, newcomer Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, has two nominations on the Best Original Song shortlist, High Life and Meet in the Middle.

High Life is performed by Hewson and teenage star Kinlan, with Hewson sharing a co-writing credit alongside writer-director Carney and songwriter Gary Clark.

Meet in the Middle is performed by Hewson and Gordon-Levitt, with the actors collaborating with writer-director Carney and songwriters Robert John Ardiff and Gary Clark on the composition.

The story of a troubled family relationship reborn with the help of music, Flora and Son was acquired by Apple TV+ earlier this year in a reported $20 million deal. It screened in Irish cinemas in the autumn.

Dublin companies Treasure Entertainment and Distressed Films are among the producers on Flora and Son, which is supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland.

Poor Things, which reunites star Emma Stone, The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos, and Irish company Element Pictures, features in the Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, and Original Score categories.

The film tells "the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe)".

The French short film A Kind of Testament, which includes Irish actress Angela Clerkin among its voice cast, is on the Animated shortlist.

Poor Things will be released in cinemas on Friday 12 January 2024.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday 23 January 2024.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday 10 March 2024.
