Oppenheimer becomes the highest-grossing film in Irish Film Institute history

The Cillian Murphy-starring Oppenheimer has overtaken the Oscar-nominated An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) as the highest-grossing film in the Irish Film Institute's 31-year history.

Prior to An Cailín Ciúin's 2022-2023 success at the IFI, the record was held by Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan's 2017 film Dunkirk.

Announcing the new record set by Oppenheimer at the IFI's Dublin base, IFI Cinema Programmer Kevin Coyne said: "The success of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer at the IFI is a tribute to the director's ability to create mature, thought-provoking films that are best enjoyed and appreciated on the big screen, with an audience of fellow film fans.

"We are particularly pleased to be able to present the work of someone who is such an advocate for the cinema experience on this magnificent 70mm format, as he prefers."

Earlier this week, it was announced that Barbie has become the highest-grossing film in Irish box office history.
