It is reported that a scripted series about U2 is "in the works" from Star Wars director JJ Abrams and Netflix.

Entertainment trade publication the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, says that Abrams' Bad Robot Productions has teamed up with the streaming giant for the series, which is described as being "in the early development stages".

The planned show will reportedly be written by Anthony McCarten, the writer of the Freddie Mercury/Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

McCarten received Oscar nominations for three films that were based on true stories: The Two Popes, Darkest Hour and The Theory of Everything.

"Details of U2's involvement are being kept under wraps though sources say the band behind hits including With or Without You and Pride (In the Name of Love) is expected to be involved and sanction the project," said the Hollywood Reporter.

"Plot details are also being kept under wraps," it added.
