John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen have recorded together for the very first time on a new track called Wasted Days, the first single from Mellencamp's forthcoming album.

Springsteen sings and plays electric guitar on the track, the first of several songs the close friends have recorded together.

The video for the song was shot in New Jersey earlier in September by frequent Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny, who made Bruce’s 2019 concert movie Western Stars and won an Emmy earlier this year for his Springsteen on Broadway film.

Wasted Days is the first taster of Mellencamp's new album, which is released next year and is the 69-year-old veteran’s first studio effort since 2017’s Sad Clowns & Hillbillies and the 2018 compilation Other People’s Stuff.

Speaking about recording with his old friend, Springsteen (72) said, "I worked on three songs on John’s album and I spent some time in Indiana with him.

"I love John a lot. He’s a great songwriter and I have become very close [with him] and had a lot of fun with him. I sang a little bit on his record."

Springsteen and The E Street Band are reportedly being lined up for a Croke Park date next summer.

Meanwhile, a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band concert film and companion album, bringing together their iconic 1979 No Nukes performances, is to be released in November.
