Courteney Cox and Ed Sheeran have given Friends fans one thing that was missing from last week's long-awaited reunion special - Monica and Ross' iconic dance routine from 1999.

The One with The Routine saw Monica (Cox) and Ross (David Schwimmer) make a bid to appear on TV show Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve by unveiling the moves they had learned as children.

Over the weekend, Cox and Sheeran gave fans what they had been waiting for, with Sheeran posting the clip to his Instagram.

"Had a reunion of our own this weekend," he wrote, adding the hashtags #TheRoutine, #IKnow, #Friends4eva and #ObviouslyBetterThanRoss.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter's podcast, Friends: The Reunion director Ben Winston said 'The Routine' did not make the cut for the special because the cast could not remember the moves and did not want to throw shapes in front of the audience.

"I did say [to Cox and Schwimmer], 'Would you ever consider doing 'The Routine'?'" he recounted. "And both of them were like, 'Oh, please don't make us do that'.

"There were certain things I really cared for, like the table read or the quiz. I also couldn't work out where it would have worked. I'm not sure it would have landed 20 years later. But it was definitely on my list of ideas that I pitched."
