Chadwick Boseman was posthumously honoured for his performance in the music drama Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at the virtual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in the US on Sunday night.

The Black Panther star died last August after suffering from colon cancer for a number of years. His illness had not been made public. He was 43.

His Best Actor SAG Award was accepted by his widow, Simone Ledward Boseman.

She said: "'If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind'. That's a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you, Screen Actors. Thank you, Chad. Thank you."

The awards are seen as an indicator of Oscar success in the acting categories. The Academy Awards take place on Sunday, 25 April.

Boseman's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom co-star Viola Davis won the Best Actress award for her performance in the Netflix film. She paid tribute to Boseman in her acceptance speech, as did his Black Panther co-star Daniel Kaluuya, winner of Best Supporting Actor for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah.

The award for Best Supporting Actress in the film categories went to Youn Yuh-Jung for her performance in the family drama Minari.

In the television drama categories, there were wins for The Crown and one of its stars, Gillian Anderson. Ozark's Jason Bateman was named Best Actor in a Drama Series.

In the comedy categories, the Schitt's Creek cast won Best Ensemble and star Catherine O'Hara was also individually honoured. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis was named Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player tonight at 10:15pm.
