Irish BAFTA honouree Niamh Algar has told RTÉ Entertainment that she did the "classic thing" of immediately ringing her mother when she found out the news - only to have to ring her back to ask her not to tell anyone else when she realised the announcement was embargoed.
The Calm with Horses and The Virtues star is one of 20 honourees in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' (BAFTA) Breakthrough Brits initiative with Netflix, which celebrates and mentors the next generation of British-based talent across film, television and gaming.
"It's just a lovely thing to get the nod to know that you're on the right path and doing something right," Algar told RTÉ Entertainment.
"I was working on another film at the time when I saw the email and did the classic thing - rang my mum and told her. But she had me on loudspeaker so it was her and all her mates in a car! Then I read the embargo which said, 'Don't tell anyone' and I had to ring her back!"
Algar paid tribute to The Virtues' writer-director Shane Meadows for inspiring her in her career.
"I think that [working on The Virtues] has been a massive learning curve, in the sense of working in this industry and the things that you pick up and especially working with Shane," she said.
"He was a filmmaker that I really admired his work growing up so to be working with him was just a dream come true. I definitely came out feeling a lot more prepared and appreciating the homework that you do put into a character."
Algar and her fellow BAFTA honourees will be celebrated at a special event at the Banqueting Hall on London's Whitehall next week.
"I've to sort out a frock for that," she added. "My mam is coming over!"
