Kendrick Lamar leads the way in next year's Grammy nominations with nods in eight categories.

The American rapper swept the board at last year's ceremony after the release of his acclaimed record Damn, winning best rap album, music video, rap song, rap performance and rap/sung performance,

This year he is nominated for his work on the Black Panther soundtrack.

Meanwhile, Canadian rapper Drake follows closely behind with seven nominations, including song of the year for God's Plan.

He will compete with Lamar in the hotly-contested Album of the Year category with his chart-topping release Scorpion.

The album of the year race also includes Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer, Kacey Musgraves’s Golden Hour, Brandi Carlile’s By the Way, I Forgive You and Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys.

Folk singer Brandi Carlile has bagged six nominations, while Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover's musical alter-ego) and Cardi B each have five.

The Recording Academy also gave a nod to the late rapper Mac Miller, with a nomination for Best Rap Album for his final album Swimmer.

The 2018 Grammy Awards will take place on February 10 next year.
