It has been reported that British actor Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman as film studio Warner Bros is set to focus on getting Supergirl on the big screen.
According to the highly reputable Hollywood Reporter, Cavill - who has played Superman in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League - will not be playing Clark Kent and his re-caped caped alter ego, although neither side has confirmed the story.
"While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we've always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged," a Warner Bros spokesperson said after the Hollywood Reporter story was published.
"Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," a studio source had told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work."
A second source suggested the studio is hoping to hit a "reset" button after a string of failures and lack of critical acclaim.
It is thought that Warners are now shifting their strategy and focusing on standalone movies, including an upcoming Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story.
Cavill recently starred in Mission: Impossible - Fallout and it was announced last week that Henry has been cast in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Witcher.
The eight-episode adaptation of the best-selling medieval fantasy book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski centres on Cavill's character Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a ‘Witcher’.
