Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor is to return to his former Sopranos stomping ground for the big screen prequel to the iconic crime-drama.

US entertainment trade website Deadline reports that the film has the working title The Many Saints of Newark and has been written by Sopranos creator David Chase and one of the series' writers, Lawrence Konner.

The planned film is set during the race riots in Newark, New Jersey in 1967.

Taylor directed nine episodes of The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007. He also directed episodes of seasons one, two and seven of Game of Thrones.

His other credits include the films Terminator: Genisys and Thor: The Dark World, and the series Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men and The West Wing.

There has been no casting news for The Many Saints of Newark to date. The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones airs next year.
