There's a strong Irish presence at this year's Critics' Choice Awards with Saoirse Ronan and Daniel Day Lewis among the names to feature in the nominations for the annual US ceremony which recognises achievement in TV and films.  

Ronan is in the running for Best Actress for her role in Lady Bird, which has also been nominated for Best Movie, while three-time Oscar winner Day Lewis is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread

Ronan is also nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy for Lady Bird and London-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh is in the running for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,

The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner, which was co-produced by Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon, is nominated in the Best Animated Feature category and Irish actress Caitriona Balfe is in the running for Best Actress in a Drama Series for time travel drama Outlander.


Day Lewis recently gave a cryptic explanation as to why his role in Phantom Thread, in which he plays obsessed couturier Reynolds Woodcock, will be his last appearance in a film.

Lady Bird has received the highest ever score on film review agrregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association vote int the awards and the winners will be revealed on January 11, 2018 when the award ceremony is broadcast on US channel CW.
