Liam Neeson has explained how he tried to discourage his son Micheál from acting in a bid to protect him from the rejection that comes with the trade.

Neeson, 65, said that when his 22-year-old son told him he wanted to be an actor, he "tried to talk him out of it."

He said that in the acting game: "you're rejected because of this. The space you occupy. You're too tall. You're too Irish. Your nose is too broken. You're too this, you're too that. So it's - you want to save your kids from all that, you know?''

Despite his protestations, Michéal whose late mother Natasha Richardson, his aunt and grandmother are all from the talented Redgrave acting bloodline, has already worked with his father playing his son on a film called Hard Powder.

In the movie, which will be released in 2018, Neeson plays a snowplough driver out for revenge on drug dealers who he thinks killed his son. The film is based on the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance.

Last month Liam insisted at the Toronto Film Festival that he would no longer be involved in action films. He had said: 'I'm 60-bleep-bleep-5 ! Give me a break, guys."

However, he has since said he has been tempted by a "couple more" scripts.
