Redwater – the EastEnders spin-off – debuts this Sunday night on RTÉ One. With its stellar cast and intriguing storyline it promises to be unmissable viewing whether you are a soap fan or not.

The eagerly-awaited six-part series, which was filmed in Dunmore East, Co Waterford and Co Wicklow over five months last year brings two of EastEnders much-loved characters to Ireland.

It tells the story of what happens when Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Ritchie) visit the Kellys and Byrnes in the fictional Irish village of Redwater in search of Kat's long-lost son.

Downton Abbey's Maria Doyle Kennedy, Lost's Fionnula Flanagan, The Commitments' Angeline Ball and Ian McElhinney from Game of Thrones are among the cast of the drama, which is a co-production with Dublin company Element Pictures.

Speaking ahead of the series premiere Fionnula Flanagan told RTÉ that her character Agnes puts her family first at all costs.

She said: "She loves her family, she loves her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren and she fights for them.

"She fights for that to be kept as it always was and anything that threatens it must be kept at bay.

"She's a tough broad as they say."

Ian McElhinney who plays her husband Lance added: "The one that really runs the roost, who controls everything, is the matriarch, his wife."

In the first episode this Sunday Kat, Alfie and Tommy (Henry Proctor) arrive in Redwater, where celebrations are in full flow for a lively annual fundraiser – bringing them straight into the heart of the community.

Despite promising Alfie that she will keep a low profile, Kat can’t rest and is on the hunt for possible suitors who might be her son. Andrew (Peter Campion), son of Roisin (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and Padraig (Stephen Hogan) seems the perfect fit.

Could she have found him so soon? We sincerely doubt it, but we'll definitely be tuning in to see what happens.
