Faye Dunaway has addressed the now infamous Oscars best picture gaffe for the first time saying she felt "very guilty" about reading out the wrong winner.
Dunaway took to the stage with her Bonnie & Clyde co-star Warren Beatty at this year's Academy Awards to present the final Oscar of the night; Best Picture. The presentation made history as Dunaway read out the wrong winner, announcing La La Land instead of Moonlight due to a mix-up backstage with the envelopes.
Addressing the incident publicly for the first time, Dunaway revealed that she initially thought Beatty was trying to be funny by stalling with the announcement.
"So he took the card out, and he didn't say anything," Dunaway said on NBC Nightly News. "He paused. He looked over me, offstage. He looked around. And I finally said, 'You're impossible'. I thought he was joking. I mean, I thought he was stalling.
"Warren's like that. He kind of holds the power and makes people... A dramatic pause. But it's part of his charm. And I read the name of the film on the card."

When asked if she felt 'stung' by the situation she replied, "Yeah, completely. And we were, I won't say deer in the headlight, but you are completely stunned. You don't know what has happened."
Dunaway added that she isn't angry about the mix-up but felt "very guilty."
"I thought, 'I could have done something, surely. Why didn't I see Emma Stone's name on the top of the card?"
Beatty recently made his movie comeback with Rules Don't Apply, having last appeared on screen over 15 years ago.

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker revealed that he has a few more projects on the back burner.
"I have a couple of things that are in the back of my mind now," Beatty said.
"I have learned not to say what they are, because if I say what they are, they'll say 'Oh, he's working on such and such' and then when I finally make it at the age of, oh 112, they'll say 'Well, it couldn't have been very good or he'd have already made it'."
