Dignam, Christy
Christy Dignam (1960-2023) singer, songwriter and musician from Finglas in Dublin.
He formed the band Aslan in 1982 with Billy McGuinness, Joe Jewell, Alan Downey and Rodney O'Brien. Their debut single 'This Is’ was hugely popular and became the longest playlisted single at that time on RTÉ 2FM, and their debut album ‘Feel No Shame’ topped the Irish chart.
Dignam’s long-standing issues with addiction saw him leave the band in 1988 and form a musical partnership, Dignam and Goff, with guitarist Conor Goff in 1990. The two performed with a band and also as an acoustic duo, toured widely and released an EP and six singles.
The remaining members of Aslan continued to perform during this period as The Precious Stones but in 1993 Christy Dignam was reconciled with his former bandmates and Aslan reformed.
The LP ‘Goodbye Charlie Moonhead’ followed and Aslan enjoyed huge success with 'Crazy World', the first single from that album. Christy Dignam continued as frontman for the band, who are known for their live shows and loyal fanbase, and have released eleven albums to date.
