Five decades of Irish analogue television broadcasting came to an end with the switchover to digital on 24 October 2012.
The Saorview digital service ushered in a new era in Irish broadcasting, with clearer pictures, better sound quality and access to a wider range of channels.
This RTÉ News report on the switchover features archive footage of Éamon de Valera on the opening night of Telefís Éireann on New Year's Eve 1961. Conor Hunt reports on the end of analogue, with Miriam O'Callaghan double-clicking the mouse.
Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte, describes the switchover as a landmark event in the history of Irish television. Mick Kehoe, Engineer for RTÉ Networks Limited, says they are delighted to have the "latest and greatest" in technology.
RTÉ Chairman, Tom Savage, speaks of the benefits that the new digital service will bring in terms of the visual quality of broadcasts.
Brian Geraghty, Saorview Digital Reception Manager, states that Saorview are offering support to anyone experiencing difficulties with the switchover.
