Shop steward Karen Gearon on what life was like before the strike.
Karen Gearon was the shop steward in the Henry Street branch of Dunnes Stores in Dublin. In this piece filmed in her home towards the end of the strike, she recalls what life was like before it began.
The mainly female strikers were all very young at the time and not really concerned about what was going on in the world. Gearon herself was in her early twenties and in search of a career, money and independence. But she found working conditions harsh in Dunnes, where intimidating managers would make girls cry.
The shots of Gearon in her local pub shows her playing pool with fellow-strikers Mary Manning and Alma Russell.
