Bernadette Devlin stood as a candidate for the People's Democracy in South Derry, a Unionist constituency.
Although Major Chichester Clark won the seat with 9,195 votes, Devlin polled well, attracting 5,812 votes. In an interview for RTÉ, she expresses her delight and talks about her future.
Devlin describes the votes that she received as "votes of solidarity for the people of Ulster". She is not interested in a future in party politics but rather a politics of the people and says, "If the politics of the people are on the streets, that's where I will be".
