Irish troops fighting at Mons in August 1914 soon found themselves making a desperate retreat. Cavalry trooper E.H. de Stacpoole describes losing his own horse and finding a replacement.
E.H. de Stacpoole describes the fighting that took place as they retreated from Mons. During a battle he was thrown from his horse which was killed. Without a horse he was marching with a battalion that had only eighty men left. They came across a cavalry horse that looked fit and well except for the blood of the previous rider.
