The top ten Irish sports stars were presented with their awards by an Taoiseach in Dublin. The big award went to Stephen Roche.

They are Frank O’Meara (athletics), Brian Stafford (GAA football), Joe Cooney (hurling), Commandant Gerry Mullins (equestrian), Eamon Darcy (golf), Dennis Taylor (snooker), Pad Eddery (horseracing), Hugo McNeil (rugby), Liam Brady (soccer), Danny Blanchflower (hall of fame award) and the supreme Sports Star of the Year was Stephen Roche.
