Lansdowne Road in Dublin was the venue for the first time when the Republic of Ireland played England in a European Championship qualifier.
England took the lead after eight minutes when Bob Latchford headed them in front. The Repubilc of Ireland grew into the half and created a half chance for Don Givens.
Ireland were awarded a free to the right of the England box when Kevin Keegan stopped a run from Dave O'Leary with a foul. Liam Brady slipped the free kick to Gerry Daly who scored the equaliser.
