The Embassy of the United Sates of America in Dublin looks set to relocate to a new building.
The US Embassy for Ireland has been located at 42 Elgin Road, Dublin 4 for over four decades. The iconic building was constructed in the early 1960s and opened in 1964. At the official opening, US Congressman Wayne Hayes addressed guests stating,
This building uniquely recalls the noble, Celtic, Christian towers of ancient Ireland.
The embassy building was designed by American architect John M Johansen, in consultation with Irish architect Michael Scott.
US authorities confirmed today that the embassy is now on a list for relocation. Robert J Faucher, Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy, explains that the delegation has outgrown the building.
We need a more modern building. We need a building with more space.
Over the years, the US embassy has been the focal point for many notable events including political protests and queues for American visas in the 1980s. Following the events of 9/11, it became the focal point of public grief for the victims of the terrorist attacks with thousands lining up to sign the books of condolences.
US government officials will begin the search for a new location for the Dublin embassy. The proposed move could take years to complete.
The stars and stripes will be flying here in Dublin 4 for some time to come.
