A new TV movie about disgraced music producer Phil Spector is set to air on US TV next week and ahead of the screening, star Al Pacino has cast doubt on Spector guilt over the 2003 murder of actress and model Lana Clarkson.
"I was left with an ambivalence, there’s no doubt about that," says the veteran 72-year-old actor and according to a report in The Daily Express he also states that the film’s director David Mamet is even more convinced of 73-year-old Spector’s innocence.
"David thinks he’s not guilty but the movie takes a cryptic approach," says Pacino. "You’re wondering if it was an accident. I like the fact that it’s a bit up in the air."
Clarkson was 40 when she was found fatally shot at Spector’s California mansion. Spector’s initial trial in 2007 ended with the jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict but a second jury found him guilty of second degree murder in 2009 and he was sentenced to 19 years.
Eccentric music producer Spector worked with a host of acts including The Ronettes, The Ramones and The Beatles and was acclaimed for his innovative Wall of Sound production methods.
Pacino stars alongside Helen Mirren as Spector’s attorney Linda Kenney Baden in the film which is simply titled Phil Spector.
