Actor John Goodman has revealed that he checked into a rehabilitation centre to get himself sober in 2007.

"It was getting to be too much," the Roseanne star and Coen Brothers regular told The Guardian.

"It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death. It was time to stop." He mentioned ill effects on three facets of his character: "Temperament. Memory, Depression."

Goodman, well recovered from his drink problems, is currently promoting Ben Affleck's new movie, Argo. The film explores Hollywood's role in the Iranian hostage crisis, which ultimately led to the end of the President Jimmy Carter's administration.

Affleck stars as CIA operative Tony Mendez, who dreams up a fake movie so he can help spring six Americans from the Canadian embassy in Tehran.

Goodman plays the late John Chambers, the real-life makeup artist who designed the masks on the original Planet Of The Apes pictures. Chambers' task is to manufacture a pretend sci-fi production, on the understanding that the endangered Americans are film-makers who are in Iran looking for locations.
