Deep Purple's Jon Lord dies at 71

Keyboard player and Deep Purple co-founder died yesterday July 16th of pancreatic cancer after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

He was surrounded by his family at a London Clinic. A statement added: "Jon passes from Darkness to Light."

Born in Leicester, Lord co-founded Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the group's songs including Smoke on the Water, their most famous hit. He also played with bands including Whitesnake.

Deep Purple split in 1976 but reformed in 1984, releasing Perfect Strangers, their first album since 1975's Come Taste the Band. Lord retired from Deep Purple in 2002.

Lord was influenced by classical, blues and jazz but played his Hammond organ with a rock attitude and helped Deep Purple become pioneers of progressive and heavy rock and one of the biggest acts in the world.
