Adele has been voted Britain’s most popular act with an estimated 730,000 fans giving her their number one.

The figures for the poll – based on concert ticket and merchandise sales - came in the wake of the news that the singer’s album, 21, had passed Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become the UK’s fifth biggest-selling album of all time.

Take That were in second place, pipping Coldplay. Both groups racked up the same number of fans (700,000 fans) but the reformed boy band’s fans spent more money on their musical heroes.

Pink and the Foo Fighters came in at joint fourth with a projected 400,000 fans, relegating Rihanna to sixth place with 370,000.
