Michael Fassbender has been named Best Actor in the 15th annual Online Film Critics Society Awards.

Fassbender won the award for his performance in Shame, which opens in Irish cinemas on Friday January 13.

He is also Golden Globe-nominated for the film.

Tilda Swinton was named Best Actress in the Online Film Critics Society Awards for her performance in We Need to Talk about Kevin.

Christopher Plummer was Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, with Jessica Chastain Best Supporting Actress for Tree of Life and also the recipient of a special award for breakthrough performer of the year.

The Tree of Life also won the awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Terrence Malick), Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

Rango was named Best Animated Feature, with A Separation Best Film Not in the English Language and Cave of Forgotten Dreams Best Documentary.
