Game of Thrones has been named in the American Film Institute’s Top 10 TV shows of 2011.
HBO’s bloody fantasy epic, based on the books by George R R Martin and shot largely in Belfast, starred Sean Bean, Mark Addy and Love/Hate’s Aidan Gillen. A second series is due for release in 2012.
The AFI has posted its TV Top 10 since 2001, a prestigious list that very often acknowledges shows that have been overlooked by such awards as the Golden Globes and Emmys. In the past the AFI has given the nod to such iconic works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Wire and Battlestar Galactica.
There were also a number of dark horses in this year’s selection including Louie and Justified. The most significant absentees were The Walking Dead and Glee.
