Singer Adele, who is preparing for an operation on her vocal chords, has spoken about her private heartache.

In an interview with the US version of Cosmopolitan, she spoke about her ex-boyfriend, whom she has chosen not to name: "It's bittersweet because I wouldn't give up this success for anything. But at the same time, I'd do anything to be with him. I miss him. I do.

"It's hard singing all these songs because it makes me remember how brilliant we were when we were good... and how tragic it was when we were bad."

The 23-year-old Grammy winner said singing her huge hit Someone Like You brings back difficult memories: "Even now, I get emotional performing that. It was such an honest thing to write."

The Londoner, who is renowned for her heartfelt lyrics, has said that she has never told a man she loves him.

She added: "It's hard to share feelings. I've felt them. I just can't say them.

"God, if I find happiness what will I write about!"
