John Barrowman, star of Torchwood, told RTÉ TEN today that he has Irish roots.

“My grandfather, Andrew Butler, was Irish and came from County Clare,” said man who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC sci-fi series.

“In fact my niece, Clare, is named after the county. What I’d love to do is a programme researching my Irish roots to see how strong they are. That’s as much as I know as my mother has spoken no further about it but I know that my mom and dad have visited Clare. I have never visited but it’s something I want to do.”

Barrowman also talked about how he got his recurring role in Desperate Housewives, how he met the love of his life and why he'd like to see Captain Jack on the big screen.

Apart from his TV work (Barrowman has also hosted the top-rating Tonight’s the Night), the Glasgow-born showman is also an all-singing, all-dancing star of stage and has just released his latest album, The Very Best of John Barrowman (Sony). His new stage show, John Barrowman, is at the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin, on November 10.
