Adele has reportedly been told by doctors to avoid singing or talking for at least a month as she attempts to recover from acute laryngitis.

Doctors have apparently said that the singer could do serious long term damage to her voice, and may develop nodules on her vocal chords.

A frustrated Adele, 23, who has already had a week off in the hope she'd get better, wrote on her website: "There is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctors' advice and rest some more."

She has already postponed her tour in the US - where her single Rolling in the Deep is No1 - and will have to cancel other shows.

Doctors say her laryngitis is being worsened by her cigarette habit. She recently gave it up for two months but described the experience as grim" and started again.

A source close to the Grammy and Brit award- winner told us: "Adele's voice is very special. But if she continues to abuse it in the way she has, then she could lose it completely."

The source further stated: "The problem is that she's now back in London and seeing her mates like the comedian Alan Carr, and all she wants to do is have a gossip with them."
