Irish designer Paul Costelloe talks us through the thrills and spills of the Michelle Obama's style.

She wore this when Barack won the Presidency and this didn't work. It was a jersey dress, with Lycra in it and she hasn't got that kind of figure. She would have been better off going back to a suit or something simple. I don't think this was one of her best; it looks more like a high street dress.

I thought she looked lovely in this red dress. This was quite early on and this is one of her best. She looks incredibly slim and he hasn't got any grey hair! She looks very well and the high waist suits her. That was a winner.

This was the Inaugural Ball and I think it works quite well, it's getting there. Maybe the strap is just a little broad, she has great shoulders and arms, I would have refined that a little but the shape is flattering. She looks beautiful dancing with her husband, it's a great shot.

Over gilding the lily there! I like the way she's wearing her hair and I don't mind the colour grey. If it didn't have the flowers on the skirt it might be quite nice, just a little of that print on top. I know she's being informal but one has to be very careful on an official occasion.

Oddly enough, given the colours and shape, this looks very, very good and correct for the occasion. Her arms are on display and it still has the high waist, it's very good

She's very thoughtful, wearing this green dress on St Patrick's Day. Probably not great but you can't knock it for her kind thoughts - I wouldn't criticise it. I would like to offer something for next year's St. Patrick's Day, we should organise that!

Sexy, it looks fine, strangely enough. I'm not sure though if it's correct, I just don't think this is regal enough, it's a bit raunchy - Sharon Stone could probably get away with it.

This is probably the weakest of all - desperate. You see the boning at the bust coming up, the fabric I'm sure is expensive but it looks very cheap. It looks that Penney's evening wear. Hair's wrong, dress is wrong - one out of ten on this one.

Very nice, another eight out of ten. I think that and the red one stand out because it's simple, fluid from the waist. She's not small around the hips and finally we've something feminine.
