Williamson wins bronze at World University Games

Lisburn swimmer Michael Williamson claimed Ireland's first medal at the 22nd World University Games in Daegu, Korea, today with a bronze medal performance in the 200m Breaststroke final.

The 22-year-old touched for first at 50m in a time of 30.65 but faded over the final 100m to allow Japan's Daisuke Kimura and Russian Sergei Gerasimov to come through for the top two placings. Gerasaimov took gold in a new World University record of 2:13.78.

Williamson, a finalist at the 2001 games in Beijing, clocked 2:15.52 for third place from lane seven. Tennessee-based Andrew Bree also qualified for the final and placed sixth.

The women's 4x100m freestyle relay team, led off by Julie Douglas, failed to qualify from their heat, finishing sixth in a time of 3:56.46.
