The FAI has announced the death of their former president Louis Kilcoyne, who has died following an illness.
Kilcoyne served as president of the FAI between 1994 and 1996. He was also vice-president of the Olympic Council of Ireland and represented the Olympic movement at FIFA on their Youth Committee.
He was a long-standing FAI council member, representing Shamrock Rovers and Cork City, and was also an FAI honorary life president.
Leading the tributes, FAI president Paddy McCaul said: “I was very sad to learn of Louis’ passing today.
“He had a lifelong involvement in the game and rose to the position of FAI president in 1994.
“He was always very good company, knowledgeable and very supportive to me in my role.
“He’ll be sadly missed and I offer my sincere condolences to his family.”
Commenting on the sad news, chief executive of the FAI John Delaney added: “Louis was always involved in football from his earliest days at Breffni United through to national and international level.
“We will mark his passing along with other members of the football family at the forthcoming Bosnia match in Aviva Stadium.
“My thoughts and prayers at this time are with his wife Theresa, his son Giles, daughter Jane, and all other family members.”
