Premier Division league leaders Cork City are through to round three of the Carlsberg FAI Cup, but they had to work hard for their victory against a battling Galway side in the second round replay in front of 3,500 spectators at Turners Cross.

The crucial goal came from the penalty spot with 20 minutes remaining when Cork referee Alan Kelly awarded the homeside the spot kick for a foul on George O'Callaghan in the area.

John O'Flynn scored from the resultant kick allthough goalkeeper Alan Gough got his hands to the shot.

Galway were not too happy with the referee's decision and their protests continued, resulting in midfielder Colin Fortune being shown a second yellow card by Kelly on 76 minutes.

Up until the goal the Eircom First Division side were very much in with every chance of causing an upset, Dave O'Dowd shooting wide when in a good position just before half time.

But Cork dominated the second half and only goalkeeper Gough stood in their way on several occasions.

Goalscorer O'Flynn and man of the match Roy O'Donovan went close to adding to the lead, but it ended in a narrow win for the homeside.
