Title-chasing Dundalk have suffered an injury blow with striker David McMillan set to miss the rest of the season through ankle ligament damage.

The 25-year-old Dubliner suffered the injury during his side's 2-0 win over UCD in their Airtricity Premier Division clash last Friday.

“Obviously, I am very disappointed with the news. My season is over and it’s disappointing," McMillan told Dundalkfc.com.

"I went for an MRI scan yesterday [Tuesday] and was just waiting for the result. I was hoping it was just a sprain but I have torn ligaments in my ankle."

The former Sligo Rovers man, who played in Dundalk's recent EA SPORTS Cup final win over Shamrock Rovers, has netted 15 goals this season for the Lilywhites but will now miss the title run-in.

Stephen Kenny’s charges lead second-placed Cork City by three points with four games to play.

McMillan added: "Hopefully the guys can push on to more success, finishing it off with a league title.

“I am just disappointed that I won’t be able to help but that’s the way it goes.”

“It’s very unfortunate for David," said Dundalk boss Kenny. "He just jumped for the ball and it was the way he landed on his ankle which did the damage.

"He requires surgery and it is very unfortunate for him. He has been brilliant. He has made an excellent contribution to the team this year and he has been a really great signing but that’s why we have a squad.

“It’s a great opportunity now for Mark Griffin.”
