Former Republic of Ireland international Gary Doherty has announced his retirement from football at the age of 34.
The versatile Doherty had been out of action since sustaining a serious knee problem when playing for his club Wycombe Wanderers against Barnet in a pre-season friendly.
He made 501 club appearances at every level of the English game and won 33 caps for his country.
Doherty began his career in 1997 with Luton Town, where he caught the eye of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy and also made a £1million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
He also played for Norwich, Charlton and then League 2 outfit Wycombe.
His Irish career began at underage level, where he was part of the famous 18 side that won the European Championships in 1998. He also played in the U20 side that reached the quarter finals of the 1999 World Youth Championships.
He played a total of 33 times for Ireland, scoring four goals, since making his debut against Greece in 2000, but has not featured in recent years.
Gareth Ainsworth, manager of Doherty's club Wycome Wanderers, said: "Gary is a special guy who's had a fantastic career so I'm gutted for him that he's had to retire.
"I know it was a tough decision but he has to do what's right for him and I know I can speak for all of the lads when I say it's been a privilege to have him in the squad.
"He's a model professional who's had a great influence even when he's been out of the team, and we'll miss having him about the place."
