Title race far from over, insists Cork City boss Caulfield

Cork City manager John Caulfield insists his side will "push it to the end" in the title race despite losing ground on SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Dundalk.

The Rebels drew 0-0 away to Sligo on Saturday night, which leaves them seven points - with a game in hand - behind the reigning champions, who beat Derry City 3-1 on Friday.

"There are still seven/eight games to go in the league," Caulfield told RTÉ Sport. "Every game is to play for and that's the way we must approach the matches.

"I know people think that it's all over and that everyone wants Dundalk to win the league but we've been staying in (contention) all season.

"We've always been playing catch-up and it has been difficult but the lads have battled hard.

"We intend to push it right to the end and we still believe there could be a twist in the run-in to this campaign.

"We'll move on to Tuesday night. We're back at home against Galway and we have an opportunity to close the gap."

Caulfield felt that his side could have claimed all three points against the Bit O'Red but admitted that a draw was probably a fair result.

"It was always going to be difficult," he said. "Sligo have had very good results against us over the last couple of years.

"They came out all guns blazing and the first 20/25 minutes they played really well.

"Sligo had us on the back foot but in the second half I thought we were much better.

"The most frustrating thing is that we had three goals disallowed. Looking back on the last one, with 10 minutes to go, Dave Mulchay looks onside.

"That's frustrating but overall if you look at the chances from both sides, you could say a draw was a fair result.

"We had a couple of chances and maybe could have sneaked one but they might feel they had a few chances as well."

Sligo boss John Robertson was pleased with his side's response after last week's 4-0 hammering by Bray.

"I knew that we would get a positive response from them," he said.

"I thought we were excellent and resilient throughout.

"We were creating opportunities and had we not had one cleared off the line or had a little more composure in front of goal we possibly could have won it but overall 0-0 is a decent result."
