Premier Division fixtures wiped out by heavy rain

Water-logged pitches meant there was just 21 minutes of action in Saturday's two Premier Division games

Both of Saturday night’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division games fell victim to the heavy rain that drenched Ireland over the weekend.

Longford Town’s clash with Bray Wanderers at City Calling Stadium on the Strokestown Road was pulled shortly before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.

And Sligo Rovers v Finn Harps was abandoned after 21 minutes due to an unplayable pitch.

Both games will have to be rescheduled for a later date.

With 21 minutes played at the Showgrounds, referee Ray Matthews deemed the pitch unsafe with large puddles forming, particularly in the middle of the field, due to heavy rain throughout the evening.

This is the second time this season that this fixture has been postponed.

In March, an electrical fault with one of the floodlights on the Treacey Avenue side of the ground forced the tie to a halt with four minutes remaining.

The FAI deemed at the time that the result would stand and no replay was necessary.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport on Saturday evening, Rovers boss Dave Robertson said that although he was disappointed to see the game called off, he felt it was the correct decision in terms of player safety.

"There were a few times where the players have tried to pass and play and the ball's got stuck in a puddle,” he said.

“Players are then competing to get that loose ball and the game's become dangerous. To be fair to the delegates, they've made the decision in the interest of player safety. We wanted to play Finn Harps, but I think the referee has made the right call here."

So far, there is no indication as to when the game will be replayed. It is understood that Sligo are happy to host the game next Saturday, but Harps are not due to a potential fixture the following Monday evening.
