Dundalk hero David McMillan was thrilled after his two second-half goals helped his side reach the third round of the Champions League qualifiers.

The Dubliner struck twice as the Lilywhites came from 1-0 down on the night to secure a 2-2 draw away to Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjordur - enough to see them progress on away goals in a 3-3 aggregate draw.

As well as being a great result for the club, McMillan added it was a good result for the Airtricity League as a whole.

"It's been a good few years since any club has got through this round, ourselves last year included," the striker said.

Last year, Dundalk lost out to BATE Borisov in the second qualifying round and their reward for progressing is a rematch against the perennial Belarusian champions.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the game in Iceland, McMillan said that is something the side are "really looking forward to."

Unlike many games in the early rounds of European qualifiers, it is not a step into the unknown for Stephen Kenny's side.

"We've been here before, it's a great stadium and their pedigree is fantastic," McMillan said.

"I think it went through the 'keeper's legs, so a little bit of luck but we’ll take it"

The Belarusian side made the group stages last season, recording an impressive 3-2 win over Roma, and have done so a number of times in recent years.

As a result, McMillan admits "it'll be extremely tough" for Dundalk to record a win.

However, he added hopefully that they only lost out 2-1 on aggregate last year, before promising to "give it everything" in the hope of securing a better result than last year.

Dundalk fans may have felt their Champions League ambitions were over when Englishman Sam Hewson put FH ahead in the first-half, but the Airtricity League champions bounced back well and created some good chances before the interval.

They then won a penalty approaching the 50 minute mark, but when Ronan Finn's shot was saved it seemed as if the side's luck was not in.

Despite that setback, the players did not allow their heads to drop, with the striker saying "we kept going the way we were and kept doing the right things."

Minutes later, the ball was nestled in the back of the FH net courtesy of a long-range effort from McMillan.

He dropped deep to pick up the ball before running at the FH defence and shooting low from well outside the box. The ball passed FH goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen before bouncing in off the left-hand upright.

McMillan admits "it probably wasn’t the cleanest strike, but it’s crept in the corner."

More was to come ten minutes later when a good team move saw Dane Massey play the lively Daryl Horgan into space on the left flank.

McMillan takes up the story once more: "It was a brilliant ball from Dane down to Daryl and ... he’s cut it back right on my foot. It's in my stride, I don’t have to do anything but sidefoot it.

"I think it went through the 'keeper's legs, so a little bit of luck but we’ll take it.

"I’m just timing my run and screaming at Daryl. Without even looking he’s cut it back to me and it was a great team goal."

That goal put Dundalk 2-1 up on the night and 3-2 ahead on aggregate with the benefit of two away goals.

For most of the remainder of the match FH attacked relentlessly and despite conceding an equaliser the Lilywhites held on to progress.
