Republic of Ireland striker Jonathan Walters is confident of being fit for Euro 2016 after undergoing a minor knee operation yesterday.

Walters didn't play in Ireland's friendlies with Switzerland and Slovakia over the last week due to a cartilage problem.

He underwent surgery on Wednesday but said he should be back to full fitness in time for the summer's championships, despite the possibility he will miss the rest of Stoke's Premier League campaign.

"I've had a similar one done before and was back playing in less than three weeks so I'll be grand," Walters told Independent.ie.

Ireland's final warm-up games are against The Netherlands on 27 May and Belarus on 31 May. Their opening match at the finals is against Sweden in Paris on 13 June.

The Stoke City man emerged as the hero of Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, scoring five times, including twice in the decisive 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina in the play-off second leg at Aviva Stadium.

He was named Senior International Player of the Year at the recent FAI awards ceremony.
