Sligo Rovers have strengthened their attacking options ahead of the new Airtricity Premier Division season by signing former Ireland underage international Philip Roberts.

Roberts, who represented Ireland at under-17 and under-19 level, most recently played for Scottish Premiership side Dundee.

The 21-year-old striker joins Dave Robertson’s side after a trial period at the Showgrounds and he played nearly 80 minutes of a pre-season friendly against Derry City.

The frontman's most successful period was with Scottish Championship outfit Falkirk, where he scored five times in 26 games and Roberts is hoping that a familiarity with several Sligo players will help him settle in straight away.

"I have played with some players that are in the league from my time with Ireland underage sides," he said.

"I’ve played with Kieran Sadlier so it’s good to be back playing with him and I’ve also played with people like Mikey Drennan, Brandon Meile and Sean Maguire."

Roberts has high expectations for the season and both he and his manager are targeting a European spot.

"He (Dave Robertson) has said that he would like to break into the top four this year and try to push for a European place.

"We want to play an attacking style of football that should be good to watch for the fans. We will just be going out there to try and win as many games as we can.

"There is a lot of ambition here at the club to do well which is great."
