Arsene Wenger may not have much in common with Black Friday shoppers but the Arsenal boss admits he loves a genuine bargain as much as anyone.
With Britain braced for another day of massive sales across most retail sectors, Wenger will be preparing his side for Sunday's Premier League trip to Norwich.
The Frenchman has indicated his intention to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window - expected to be a defensively-minded midfielder after the injry blow to Francis Coquelin - and while he knows bargain buys make everyone happy his own idea of a steal may differ from that of the Black Friday masses.
"I love a bargain. Who doesn't love a bargain? I don't know many people that don't like a bargain," he said after having the concept of Black Friday explained to him.
Asked if he understood why people got so excited by the sales, Wenger added: "If they need two TVs, yes. But if they don't need one, why should they buy two? That's where you come back to what is a bargain.
"What is a bargain for us is to buy players of top quality, because only top quality strengthens our squad. I can tell you I bought Patrick Vieira for £2.5m and it was a top bargain because he was a top-quality player.
"We spent nearly £40m on Mesut Ozil but I still consider it a bargain because the player is top quality and the priority has to be the quality of the player."
Football may not have its own Black Friday but the January transfer window gives teams a chance to improve on their squads.
Wenger is currently without a host of first-team names with the likes of Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck, Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta out injured while Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are only just returning to action.
The 66-year-old therefore knows what he will be shopping for when he gets the chance - but he is not sure if football would benefit from a Black Friday-style bonanza.
"What we need is good players!" he said when asked whether football needs a Black Friday. "We are in a position where we want to do something (in January). If I find the right quality I will do something."
On the face of it, a trip to newly-promoted Norwich will be seen by many as a good place to collect three points in Arsenal's quest to maintain a title challenge.
But Wenger knows it will not always be as straightforward as that after he saw his side humbled at the Hawthorns by Tony Pulis' West Brom.
"For us, it was a bad result," he said. "But on the day everything went against us, they had one shot on target and scored two goals. That will not always happen.
"On top of that we missed a penalty and scored an own goal, so we had a nightmare. It was an unlucky day, that can happen in a season but after it is how you respond to that and we did that well on Tuesday."
