Betting on Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill taking over as the next boss of Premier League club Leicester City has been suspended by a prominent British bookmakers.

A large sum was wagered on the former Foxes boss returning to his old stomping ground, prompting the bookmakers to stop taking bets after the odds tumbled from 10-1 to 1-4 this morning.

And tonight Leicester Mercury newspaper are reporting O'Neill could be set to return and although there has been no official approach to the Football Association of Ireland at this stage, the Mercury understands City are extremely interested in talking to O'Neill about the position and an approach is expected over the weekend.

O'Neill took over as Ireland manager in November 2013. He was in charge at Leicester, who sacked Nigel Pearson at the end of June, from 1995-2000 before moving to Celtic.

There has been no official comment on the rumour from the FAI.

Ireland currently lie fourth in Euro 2016 Group D and their chances of securing a play-off place after a 1-1 draw at home to Scotland last month look slim.

A spokesman for Leicester City told RTÉ Sport that the club "would not responding to any speculation" and that the managerial process would be dealt with "in house".
