Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey has failed an out-of-competition Football Association drugs test for a non-performance enhancing substance. The Monaghan man has been placed on suspension.

McCarey, who has featured for the Republic of Ireland at underage level, joined Wolves in 2010 after completing a move from Monaghan United.

The 23-year-old has made just five appearances for the Championship side and has spent loan spells at Telford United, Walsall and York City in recent seasons.

Wolves said McCarey, who has not appeared for the Sky Bet Championship club in the league this season, "strenuously denies deliberately taking any banned substance".

A club statement read: "Aaron McCarey has failed an out of competition Football Association drug test for a non-performance enhancing substance. As a result, the Wolves goalkeeper is now subject to an immediate FA suspension from all competitive forms of football.

"The immediate suspension is a standard procedure whilst the FA's investigation is concluded.

"Aaron McCarey strenuously denies deliberately taking any banned substance. The club is extremely disappointed and concerned that one of its players has failed a drugs test.

"Neither the player nor the club will be making any further comment whilst the FA investigation is under way and not until the matter has been fully concluded."

News of the failed test comes a day after it was announced Hull midfielder Jake Livermore has also failed a test. Livermore's test showed up cocaine.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United midfielder Jose Baxter has also been suspended after also failing an out-of-competition FA drugs test.

A statement from Sheffield United on Saturday evening announced that "traces of a banned substance" were found when Baxter underwent testing.

There has been no announcement of what exactly examinations of Baxter's or McCarey's samples had shown up.

Baxter rose through the Everton's ranks from the junior sides to the first team before finding opportunities were limited at Goodison Park.

He moved on to Oldham in 2012 before joining United a year later.

An attack-minded player who can be pushed into the forward line, he scored 13 goals in the club's 2014-15 season, which ended in play-off semi-final defeat at the hands of Swindon.

The Professional Footballers' Association said it was providing Baxter with its "full support at this difficult time".
