British police are investigating an alleged road rage incident between Roy Keane and a taxi driver in Manchester.

The 43-year-old former Ireland and Manchester United captain is said to have got into an altercation with the taxi driver in Altrincham town centre, which led to police being called.

The alleged rant occurred near the Unicorn pub at the junction of Lloyd Street and Railway Street in Altrincham town centre at around 11.30am.

Keane was allegedly seen swearing and making obscene gestures through the window of the taxi before getting in his car and driving away.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At 11.30am, police were called to Ashley Road, Altrincham, to a report that a man had behaved aggressively towards another man.

"An investigation is under way to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident."

The Ireland assistant manager has been in the spotlight for a number of incidents in recent months.

Keane was involved in an altercation with a fan at the team hotel in Portmarnock before the November Euro 2016 qualifier with Scotland, which resulted in the fan receiving medical treatment but no complaint was made to gardaí.

Keane then caused controversy when he accused the media of "writing lies" at an angry press conference, in which he denied being a distraction to the national team, and also criticised Everton manager Roberto Martinez over Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy missing Ireland matches.

Ireland boss Martin O'Neill was subsequently forced to defend his assistant, saying: ""I chose in the first place to bring him in here, he's been terrific. He has been everything that I wanted him to be.

"All the distractions - some things have materialised that actually aren't of his doing to begin with, so I haven't a problem."

Ten days later, Keane stepped down from his assistant manager role with Premier League side Aston Villa after just four months, a job he had been combining with his Ireland position, and was later alleged to have tried to confront the team's midfielder Tom Cleverly at his home, an incident later played down by Villa manager Paul Lambert.
