Lee wins LG Cup in Preston

Stephen Lee won the LG Cup at Preston Guild Hall tonight, beating Peter Ebdon 9-4. Lee pocketed £82,500 for his second ranking tournament success, wrapped up with a 71 break in the 13th frame.

The world number eight, whose previous solitary world ranking title was the 1998 Grand Prix, established a 5-3 lead in the first session. Although Ebdon won the ninth frame to reduce the arrears to just one, Lee closed the door on his opponent by winning four successive frames in the concluding session.

"The whole day was tough but I couldn't be happier. Even at 8-4 I wasn't taking anything for granted because Peter's so dogged. The final hurdle is so hard to clear," said Lee.
