Toulon have dismissed reports linking Paul O’Connell to the club as "pure speculation".

The Top 14 side issued a statement rejecting stories of any contact between the 35-year-old Ireland captain and the double European champions.

The statement read: "Toulon cautions that Paul O'Connell has not signed a contract with Toulon Rugby Club and the alleged contacts between the player and the Red and Black are pure speculation."

And speaking to RTÉ Sport, Munster head coach Anthony Foley was equally dismissive of the reports.

Asked about a move to Toulon, Foley responded sarcastically, “Is he not going to Pau? Oh, that [story] was in November was it?

"All I know is he is contracted here next year. I think there’s a bit of devilment going on at the moment in and around the media, trying to upset people.

"We’re beyond that, I’ve been around the game long enough. I understand the game and I understand the workings of it. We stay on task.”

When queried about a possible contract extension for the former Lions forward, Foley said: “I don’t know, I think you’re asking the wrong man. You probably need to talk to the man himself.

"From my point of view we’ve had a lot of discussions with Paul and we’re fully focused with where we’re going and it’s important that nobody gets distracted.”

The Toulon statement was released after a report in the Irish Times, linked Toulon, along with Pau and Grenoble, to the Munster man's signature.

This is despite the fact that O’Connell has another year to run on his Munster contract, while he is also said to be considering retirement after the World Cup.

Regardless, according to the paper, French sources believe Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal has put together a two-year offer for the second row.

O’Connell has previously been linked with a move to France after this year’s World Cup, but has distanced himself from the rumours.
