French boss rings the changes for Ireland clash

French head coach Guy Noves has made six changes to his side to take on Ireland in Saturday's Six Nations encounter at the Stade de France.

France struggled to an opening day victory against Italy, winning 23-21, but they were far from their best as Noves will expect an improvement against Ireland.

Noves brings in wing Teddy Thomas and centre Maxime Mermoz to replace Hugo Bonneval, who is named on the bench, and Gael Fickou, who has been absent this week for personal reasons.

In the forwards, props Eddy Ben Arous and Rabah Slimani drop to the bench as Noves prefers Jefferson Poirot and Uini Atonio either side of skipper Guilhem Guirado, with lock Paul Jedresiak and injured flanker Louis Picamoles making way as Alexandre Flanquart and Yacouba Camara come in.

Sevens specialist Virimi Vakatawa keeps his place on the wing after making a try-scoring full international debut against Italy last Saturday, when France scraped a 23-21 win.

"In modern rugby, there is no starter or replacements," Noves said, in explanation of the changes. "It's more of a relay. It's not a sanction. Of course the players are evaluated but we also want to see the players in the squad play."

France: Maxime Medard; Teddy Thomas, Maxime Mermoz, Jonathan Danty, Virimi Vakatawa; Jules Plisson, Sebastien Bezy; Jefferson Poirot, Guilhem Guirado (capt), Uini Atoni; Alexandre Flanquart, Yoann Maestri; Wenceslas Lauret, Yacouba Camara, Damien Chouly.

Replacements: Camille Chat, Rabah Slimani, Eddy Ben Arous, Paul Jedrasiak, Loann Goujon, Maxime Machenaud, Jean-Marc Doussain, Hugo Bonneval
